Accountants seek accounting degrees because they don’t fear numbers

Some people are comfortable working with numbers, and others cringe at the thought. Personality types can become evident through simple interaction, but the career a person is studying for in college can tell a lot about his or her personality, too. In a business, every person is unique and different, but people with similar jobs can have some similar qualities. Those people who cringe at the thought of numbers don’t usually make good accountants, but those who are comfortable with math do. Adult learners who are comfortable with mathematics are those who are enrolled in the accounting college degree and career training programs at Potomac College.

What qualities make a good accountant? And, how can a Potomac College accounting education and degree foster these qualities?

Number-comfortable people tend to be more introverted, able to shut out the world and focus on a task at hand. Sometimes these people are mistaken for being unapproachable, but that usually is not the case. Because they tend to take things seriously and are rather reserved, their humor can be quite unexpected when it is expressed. If you are an accounting student at Potomac College in Washington DC or Virginia, you might possess that trait yourself, or notice that some of your class mates do.

Potomac College accounting students tend to be business and details-focused. Some of our accounting degree students are already working in an accounting career, and are returning to school to hone their skills, or get more advanced credentials. By learning the different aspects of accounting, and the various applications of bookkeeping, auditing, and interpreting financial statements, Potomac College accounting students at the associate and bachelor degree levels are able to prepare for number-centric careers.

An accounting college curriculum focuses on literal and concrete ideas and develops career skills that benefit from clear, literal logic. Accounting careers are a wonderful choice for adult learners who show good organizational skills and highly developed abilities to make sound decisions. Basic accounting courses in the Potomac College accounting degree curriculum introduce adult learners to number and organizational concepts. Advanced courses are more specialized, allowing students at our Washington, DC and Virginia college locations to compound what they learn into more difficult concepts. Ultimately, accounting students enjoy being trusted to handle complex tasks and are usually good at making difficult decisions. The Potomac College accounting degree curriculum is designed to meet these needs and talents.

Additional comments
Are you an adult learner in the Washington, DC or Virginia area? Are you interested in classes or career training in accounting?

If you decide to take courses to receive a degree in accounting, you will learn a solid skill set to prepare you for a job slated to grow in upcoming years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of accounting jobs to increase 18% from 2006 to 2016. You will learn strategic thinking and critical analysis. You will be able to figure out what the point is quickly and why it’s important, whether it’s in a piece of writing or a spoken idea being conveyed.

Businesses will love that you can take a large amount of information and consolidate it. You will also be able to use that critical analysis for problem solving. You will make decisions that can have an effect on others and their money – so, you want to make sure to have a firm grasp on the details to make the best decision possible. Risk is a large factor in making important decisions. You must be able to identify the risks in your decisions, and often, control that risk as well.

And, how do you prepare yourself for those important decisions? A strong ability to do research and be able to report what you find will prepare you.

When people are happy at their jobs, they tend to exhibit that happiness throughout other areas of their lives. At Potomac College in Washington, D.C. and Virginia, there are great opportunities for adult learners to train for a job in accounting. An adult learning (or, education program) can be the first step in a lasting career in accounting, business, and even management.

"...it was just an extension of the foundation laid earlier"

"Three months after I graduated from Potomac College, I enrolled in a graduate program. The course work I experienced was much like that of Potomac College. Graduate school was very challenging for some, but for a Potomac College Alumni, it was just an extension of the foundation laid earlier." -Derek Brooks, Class of 2002
