Exploring the Washington, D.C./Northern Virginia area
Maybe you've lived in the Washington, D.C. or Northern Virginia area all of your life. Or maybe you're new to the area and want to check out everything this area has to offer. In either case, read on to learn more about the two exciting areas that call branches of Potomac College home. You can have a lot of fun during school while completing your degree - and, can add on to your education by exploring your city.
Washington, D.C. campus
The Washington, D.C. branch of Potomac College is located in Tenleytown, just minutes from American University. It is near the Red Line of the D.C. Metro system, and is bordered by Fort Reno Park. There are several cultural attractions in the area that might be of interest to Potomac students.
The Washington Ballet Company is located in Tenleytown. The school offers classes for children and adults -- and the adult classes meet on evenings and weekends to suit a variety of school and professional schedules. If you have two left feet, or stage fright -- or, simply like to watch -- the company puts on student performances throughout the year, including The Nutcracker during the winter holiday season. The Washington Ballet Company is located at 3515 Wisconsin Avenue NW.
WAMU Radio is also located in Tenleytown. This official National Public News (NPR) radio station offers beloved programs like All Things Considered, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and a number of bluegrass, jazz, and live performance broadcasts. Washington, D.C. business professionals tune in to hear breaking news and financial reports from the nation's capital and around the country. The station is located at 4000 Brandywine St. NW.
Wisconsin Avenue has two shopping districts along its length from Georgetown, DC to Chevy Chase, Maryland. The shopping district closest to Potomac College offers a number of fancy shopping destinations. There are three record stores on Wisconsin Avenue, as well as art and framing galleries, eye-wear shops, and a Whole Foods market offering organic and exotic food and beverage products.
If it's great dining you're in the mood for, Tenleytown has restaurants to suit every palate and budget. You can find deep-dish, Chicago-style pizza and delectable seafood there. You can also find Chinese, Thai, Mexican, and other cuisines from around the world. If you want a hearty all-American meal or hamburger, you can find it in Tenleytown, too. Italian, Greek, and other Mediterranean offerings round out this district's dining options.
If you're into arts and culture, why not check out an exhibit? The American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, at 4400 Massachusetts Ave. NW houses the Watkins and Katzen Collections, as well as changing exhibitions in different artistic styles. You can see paintings and other 2-D work, sculpture, and even architecture here. Plus, the AU Museum offers opportunities to volunteer and become involved in the local arts scene. This kid-friendly museum offers guided tours for the younger set. For the creative types, Studio 4903, at 4903 Wisconsin Ave. NW, rents space out to artists and graphic designers. Its community-focused program includes public art events so you can view recent works in this wall-less workspace.
Of course, the greater Washington, DC area is accessible by Metro. Students can tour the White House, the Lincoln Monument, the Holocaust Museum, the Pentagon, the Supreme Court, the National Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian museums, and the National Gallery of Art. There's so much to see and do that you'll want to stop by some of these sites many, many times.
Herndon, Virginia campus
Herndon is an historic town located in Northern Virginia (NOVA). Most residents drive, although some do use the MetroBus connector service. It is now well-known for its major technology presence, which includes Verizon and AOL. Some professionals working at these companies, and other tech centers in the area, might appreciate the convenience of the NOVA Potomac College campus. Like Tenleytown, DC, there is a lot to see and do in the area.
Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing arts is located in Herndon. This center includes an outdoor performance area and a theater in the woods. Jazz, classical, and popular music concerts are held regularly, especially during the spring, summer, and early fall. The Wolf Trap Opera Company also performs there, as do dance companies and ensembles. The Elden Street Players, a modern amateur theater company, also calls Herndon, VA its home and performs regularly in the area.
The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum of Washington, DC has a branch in NOVA called the Steve F. Udvar-Hazy Center. It is home to several magnificent planes, jets, and rockets. For fun with nature, check out Frying Pan Park, which has live farm animals and holds equestrian events. There is also an authentic country store and a re-creation of a 1930s farm there.
Herndon is also home to Mount Vernon, a sprawling, plantation-style mansion on 500 acres of land that was home to George Washington, the nation's first president. Tourists are welcome every day of the year during visiting hours. The gift shop sells fine distilled spirits made on site. This Northern Virginia town is also home to Sully Plantation, which was owned by Confederate Army general Robert E. Lee's uncle. The site includes historic artifacts and antiques, and can be toured for a modest admission fee.
Of course, you will probably want a tasty bite or two. Herndon has all kinds of restaurants and cafes. There are large chains, such as Five Guys Burger and Fries, Cold Stone Creamery, and Starbucks. Over a dozen Asian restaurants call this town home, too. You can get Indian, Russian, and Vietnamese food at several locations. And, if you like burritos or spaghetti, there are many Mexican and Italian restaurants from which to choose.
Whether they attend the Northern Virginia campus or the Washington, DC location, Potomac College students have endless options for dining, arts, and entertainment.

"...The projects allowed me to apply classroom theory to my current job"
"When I began my educational journey at Potomac College, I epitomized the model of the non-traditional student. Having a degree has made a difference in the way I am viewed by others and even the way I view myself in my chosen profession. I am currently researching graduate programs, and I will always be thankful for the education I received at Potomac.” -Deborah Keaton, Class of 2005
