International business courses lead to great careers upon program completion

Some students who attend the Virginia or Washington, DC branch of Potomac College will choose to complete the international business training program, intending to seek international business careers. This career path is quite different from traditional American-based management, accounting, or banking careers, however. Below, you will find some more information about what it takes to pursue a career in international business.

Many students will begin careers in the American branch of a business that also operates in another country. One advantage to attending Potomac College is that it is very close to the Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC business centers, and the diverse companies with international branches that call these centers home. After acquiring experience in a company for several years, a student might be promoted to an overseas branch of the company or corporation. Or, students might opt to begin working in another country outright, courtesy of a placement program.

Some students pursuing international business training programs dream of making wildly successful foreign deals, or managing foreign money and stocks. In truth, most international business careers revolve around marketing, branding, sales, human resources, and branch management. The Potomac College liberal arts education includes courses in many areas of study, so when students begin their first international business careers, they are prepared to complete many different tasks effectively.

International business customs: Different than those in Washington, DC

In America, many corporations pride themselves on stability of day-to-day operations - or, at the very least, the illusion of stability. Working in a foreign market is a completely different experience than working in a more familiar U.S. environ. International business workers must be prepared for working conditions to change rapidly, and must brace themselves for market instability. Because global business conditions and experiences are inherently tied to the state of the global economy, these conditions can change rapidly - and American international business professionals must be prepared.

Strong interpersonal skills are important for international business success, as well. Overseas business can differ drastically from American business, and individuals who are able to quickly assimilate to different cultures and embrace diverse business techniques will be the most successful in an international market. The American management style is very different from the prevailing management styles of other nations. A good international partner will do everything he or she can to become accustomed to new ways of business, and deliver new strategies in a timely and effective manner.

Being politically astute is another advantage for international business workers. Those who have a solid knowledge of the political issues affecting each nation, as well as how the nations relate to one another, will feel most comfortable in international business. As an international marketer or manager, you are representing the United States, and acting as a liaison between America and other nations. Different cultural practices can also affect marketing techniques and practices overseas, requiring new approaches to the delivery and branding of ideas. International business program students who are able to familiarize themselves with the correct business approaches and etiquette for the country or countries in which they will be working will be the most successful.

Business around the world: Where can you go?

There are many career options from which to choose when you have completed the international business program. The Washington DC - Virginia area has plenty of resources for student careers. For example, the U.S. Department of State has an open assignments system for placing Potomac College graduates -- and other individuals who've recently completed college -- into jobs. There are opportunities in international security, information systems, and healthcare, to name a few. Other Potomac College graduates might find international business opportunities in banking, economics, or instructional learning. In addition, marketing and public relations opportunities are numerous. Teaching English abroad is yet another option, and the pay can be quite good.

One of the most important traits a student completing the international business program can have is cultural sensitivity. The manners and customs that are acceptable ord required in the United States are not the same as they are in other countries. Understanding what constitutes polite greetings, table manners, and casual conversation is imperative to international business success. Knowing how to dress correctly for each new situation you will encounter is also a smart idea. Finally, if you are able to speak a second language, or can communicate basic ideas in the language most often used where you will be stationed, you will be in a greater position to attain success.
